The Artist

African Roots

Michel Soares is a Brazilian documentary photographer based in Japan. His work explores urban life, cultural expressions, and Afro-Brazilian heritage, always with a critical and authorial vision. He was a semifinalist at the Urban Photo Awards 2025 with the series “African Roots: Faith, Resistance, and Expression” and has taken part in international exhibitions. His images move between black and white and color, revealing contrasts between motion and stillness, chaos and silence, tradition and modernity. He regularly publishes on art platforms, offering his works in limited fine art editions.

Smoking Man is a Fine Art black and white photograph captured in Bahia, Brazil. The portrait depicts an Afro-Brazilian man surrounded by cigar smoke, evoking the symbolic figure of the ‘negro fujão’ — the fugitive slave who resisted oppression and claimed his freedom through defiance, cunning, and presence. His half-covered face does not hide; it challenges. A powerful image of resistance, freedom, and Afro-Brazilian cultural identity. Homem Fumando fala sobre resistência, liberdade e respeito. O olhar atravessado pela fumaça do charuto evoca a figura do negro fujão — aquele que se recusa a aceitar a condição de escravizado e constrói sua liberdade pela astúcia, pela presença, pela desobediência. Seu rosto semicoberto não se esconde: desafia. Ele exige o que sempre foi seu.
