Kikuzakiichige in spring

Kikuzakiichige is found in Hokkaido and the Kinki region of Honshu northward, where it grows on the forest floor of deciduous broadleaf forests. It flowers from March to May, producing a single flower with white to purple petal-like sepals. It has no petals. It is named after the single flower it produces, which resembles a chrysanthemum. In Nagano Prefecture, specimens with blue flowers can be found. It flowers in early spring, and the above-ground parts wither and disappear as the young leaves of deciduous broadleaf forests unfurl, after which it lives underground on its rhizomes until the following spring.
