Kikuzakiichige is found in Hokkaido and the Kinki region of Honshu northward, where it grows on the forest floor of deciduous broadleaf forests. It flowers from March to May, producing a single flower with white to purple petal-like sepals. It has no petals. It is named after the single flower it produces, which resembles a chrysanthemum. In Nagano Prefecture, specimens with blue flowers can be found.
It flowers in early spring, and the above-ground parts wither and disappear as the young leaves of deciduous broadleaf forests unfurl, after which it lives underground on its rhizomes until the following spring. It is a type of spring ephemeral.
